It’s been a mixed weekend for me. On the plus side I got to spend time with some photography friends and shoot some awesome vehicles at the Didsbury Show and Shine. On the negative side I’ve been crippled since Saturday afternoon with a sciatic flare up. So I’m sitting here with an ice pack on my back after getting it seen to this morning. Back pain sucks big time. Seems I’m wonky and misaligned… no surprise to those who know me well! Anyway, enough about the negative stuff. On to the positive…

Thanks go out to Mike Fitton and John Fujimagari for getting the word out about the Didsbury Show and Shine and for inviting me to join the fun. Lots and lots of beautiful shiny cars and the weather was fantastic – it was all good. I had great fun chatting with some of the owners of the vehicles that caught my eye. They are a naturally proud group and are happy when people stop to chat about their vehicle and super happy when someone wants to photograph it. Some are life long weekend mechanics who always have a number of vehicles in various states of repair and others are owners of a single vehicle, their pride and joy, which they have been dreaming of owning for decades.

Here are a few of my images from Saturday. I’ll share more tomorrow or mid week. By the way all images were shot with the new Nikon D800 and the 16-35mm f4 lens. That combo is wicked! Mega pleased with the D800 so far!!

I never managed to get out to Cooking Lake, the lake Eric Fredine has made famous in photography circles, during what I call the fringe season. Getting all the necessary factors of weather, conditions and family schedule to align isn’t easy. I did manage to get out there the weekend before last, though, and I was treated to a gorgeous evening with zero wind so the water was mirror smooth. I took the opportunity to go mega minimal (for me anyway)…

(note: This image was not shot with my new D800. It was shot with my D2x)

On Monday I got the call from The Camera Store and yesterday morning the Canada Post lady was getting me to sign for delivery of my D800! Good things come to those who wait. It was a case of months of rumours about a special Nikon camera, weeks of deposit and being on a waiting list prior to the announcement, then weeks of waiting for anything more than a trickle of deliveries post announcement and then just hours after I got the call mine was in I was opening up the box on my dining room table.

I would like to take this opportunity to give a big shout out to The Camera Store in Calgary. The staff at The Camera Store are very knowledgeable and very helpful. They love photography. The selection of products is wonderful and the customer service is excellent. You would think all that would be basic at any camera store but unfortunately it’s not – especially the love photography part.

Off now to get to know my new friend who will accompany me on what I hope to be many wonderful photography adventures…

(Update: Some people have been wondering if I’m a NPS (Nikon Professional Services) member and maybe that’s why I got my D800 now. No I am not, although I will soon be rectifying that. I’m just Joe Average who put his name on the list early well before the official announcement. I’d take this as a good sign for those who are still waiting for their D800 to come in. I see a trend on social media sites with regular folk like me saying their D800 arrived this week. It will indeed take some time to clear the huge back order due to the unprecedented demand but camera stores do seem to be getting more shipments this week and they are making their way down the wait list.)

In my last post I talked about sharing images via themes on Google+ and how the opportunity has me diving into the archives and dusting off some old images. I’m having lots of fun finding images I had forgotten about and giving them new life with post processing techniques that have been learned over the years. Here’s one I shared yesterday on my own Google+ theme called #waywednesday. It was shot back in 2007 while on a family vacation in Florida. The boardwalk leads to the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge beach which is just beside the Kennedy Space Center.

There’s a great photo community over at Google+. One of the fun ways over there to share your own work and enjoy the work of other photographers is through themes. Google+ has hundreds of themes and I’d say it’s soon to be thousands. No matter what you like to shoot there are others who share your passion. I like road/path/trail images so I curate a theme on Google+ called #waywednesday. Some themes are any day themes but many are reserved for specific days. For example I love mountain images and +Michael Russell curates a theme called #mountainmonday. A few of the other themes I like to particpate in are #leadinglinesmonday, #mirrormonday, and #portraittuesday. Today is Tuesday so one particular theme has had me digging back in the archives and finding some old images to share. That theme is #EquineTuesday. Here’s an image I shot years ago on a photo jaunt through Saskatchewan…
